The Test Technician / Engineer is responsible for executing and documenting performance tests on automotive electrical components, with a specialized focus on the test methods and requirements defined in SAE / USCAR-21 and SAE / USCAR-45. The role requires strict adherence to the laboratory's ISO / IEC 17025-compliant Quality Management System to ensure the technical competence and validity of all test results.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Test execution : Perform performance testing on electrical terminals, connectors, and wire-to-wire splices according to USCAR-21 and USCAR-45 specifications. This includes performing thermal shock, temperature / humidity cycling, and mechanical stress tests.
  • Sample preparation : Prepare, configure, and inspect test samples, including crimped connections and ultrasonic welds, prior to testing.
  • Instrumentation and equipment : Operate, maintain, and calibrate specialized testing equipment, such as tensile testers, cross‑sectioning equipment, and datalogging systems.
  • Data analysis and documentation : Record all test data accurately and perform initial analysis to identify any issues or failures. Generate detailed test reports that conform to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
  • Quality management : Participate in all aspects of the ISO / IEC 17025 Quality Management System, including internal audits, proficiency testing, and corrective actions.
  • Deviation and troubleshooting : Identify and report test anomalies or non‑conformities. Assist in troubleshooting component failures and testing equipment issues.
  • Continuous improvement : Support continuous improvement efforts to enhance testing processes, increase efficiency, and reduce measurement uncertainty.
  • Sample management : Ensure proper handling, identification, and tracking of all test samples from reception through final disposition.
  • Safety compliance : Maintain a safe and organized laboratory environment, ensuring all safety protocols and regulations are followed.

Required Skills And Qualifications

  • Education : An Associate's degree in Automotive Technology, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field is preferred. A Bachelor's degree may be required for Test Engineer roles.
  • Experience : Previous experience working in a testing laboratory environment, preferably one accredited to ISO / IEC 17025.
  • Technical knowledge :

  • Familiarity with the test methods, criteria, and procedures specified in SAE / USCAR-21 and SAE / USCAR-45.
  • Strong understanding of electrical and mechanical systems relevant to automotive applications.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, standards, and test procedures.
  • Analytical skills : Strong attention to detail, excellent problem‑solving abilities, and a methodical approach to work.
  • Software proficiency : Competence with MS Office Suite (Excel, Word) and laboratory‑specific software for data collection and analysis.
  • Communication : Excellent written and verbal communication skills for documenting test results and collaborating with engineering teams.
  • Physical requirements : Ability to perform hands‑on work, lift equipment, and operate various lab instruments.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with specific equipment used for USCAR testing, such as environmental chambers, tensile testers, and electrical resistance meters.
  • Knowledge of soldering and crimping techniques.
  • Familiarity with automotive industry quality standards beyond USCAR, such as APQP and PPAP.
