Main Responsibility
With limited oversight, the R&D Engineer designs and develops embedded hardware and software solutions. Their responsibilities encompass circuit analysis, creation of wiring diagrams, and preparation of detailed schematics and ladder diagrams, leveraging established practices and concepts in the discipline. This role translates system-level customer requirements into software elements and collaborates closely with electrical, mechanical and technical teams to ensure that embedded solutions meet overall product objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement embedded applications using C, C++ and Python.
Design and evaluate electrical circuits, components and wire harnesses for new products.
Provide hardware, software and component solutions for ongoing products.
Promote platform-based, real‑time distributed architectures and ensure appropriate software development capabilities.
Employ Agile practices, continuous integration and automated testing with Atlassian tools.
Maintain and enhance legacy software to address customer requirements.
Gather and analyse customer needs; define technical and software requirements accordingly.
Manage multiple embedded-software initiatives concurrently, prioritising tasks to meet deadlines.
Mentor junior engineers and provide support for production issues.
Define system requirements for real‑time embedded software and validate performance.
Contribute to functional specifications for floor‑cleaning machinery.
Estimate effort, create schedules, work plans and establish priorities for electrical systems.
Help define test requirements and plans for control systems; conduct functional, operational and reliability tests.
Analyse failures of control‑system components or assemblies occurring in production or in the field.
Use a variety of embedded control development tools; familiarity with ST Micro and Atmel microcontrollers is advantageous.
Experience
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.
At least five years of embedded‑systems design experience with a bachelor’s degree or three years with a master’s degree.
Qualifications & skills
Capable of independently interfacing with technology partners on hardware / software development and system integration.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to set priorities and accomplish objectives with minimal supervision.
Effective verbal and written communication.
Proven teamwork skills.
Working knowledge of CAN communication protocols (CANOpen and SAE J1939).
Understanding of electric motors and controls, electronic circuits (analog, digital and microcontrollers), battery and charger applications, electro‑hydraulic controls, and electric- and engine‑powered industrial vehicles.
Familiarity with electrical and electronic test instruments such as multimeters, oscilloscopes and data loggers.
Awareness of mechanical and hydraulic systems and their interaction with electrical controls.
Understanding of manufacturing processes and assembly operations.
