Position Overview

Provide day-to-day leadership for the waterside operations to achieve the targeted volume and productivity objectives while maintaining a safe working environment. Responsible for managing the vessel, operations; ensuring safety, service and operating efficiencies are achieved. Continuous improvement for execution of operational processes and related activities. Lead the staffing of the Water Side Execution area and ensure proper training programs are in place and smoothly executed as required.

Principal Accountabilities

Responsible for leading safe operational execution processes geared towards driving effectiveness in a highly technological environment incorporating current best practices in APMT

Manage staff and labor to achieve established safety, productivity goals and volume targets.

Manages, motivates and instructs all water side operational team members and direct reports on the daily activities of the operations execution, setting priorities and structured tasks and goals

Responsible for driving the implementation of skills matrix for critical positions in the execution department

Leads, motivates and coaches operational team members and peers.

Manage the implementation of the training curriculum for equipment operators (Shuttle carriers, STS) and closely monitor its execution with the training department

Manage the implementation of the training curriculum for non-equipment operator Water Side positions (lashers, crane foremen, signalmen, etc.) and closely monitor its execution with the training department

Assist in White Collar staff career development to ensure they perform at efficient and effective levels by monitoring performance and taking appropriate action in order they reach full potential

Provides work and berth planning for the shifts based on vessel schedules and supervision for subordinates

Work closely with the other functions to facilitate the alignment and integration of all operational processes

Provide general support to other operations or non-operations as and when required

Provide WS Shift Managers, WS Supervisors, Crane Foremen and Lashing Foremen with an effective organization and control of all terminal operations during designated shift periods to meet planned objectives.

Ensures full utilization of labor and equipment, as required

Liaise with the M&R department to maximize equipment availability and effectiveness.

It is responsible for efficient allocation of all shifts operational staff and the cost-effective utilization of equipment resources to match the operational requirements of the terminal.

Ensure that recognized safe working practices are utilized for all terminal operations and maintain effective implementation of safety policies and procedures including global initiatives, procedures and standards as required.

Provide first line of response for emergency situations and incident managements.

Acts as Safety Fatal Five Champion, supports pro-actively Safety Initiatives

Provide terminal presence by maintaining significant visibility, checks all quay side activities continuously throughout shift and preparing operational reports as required by Head of Operations.

Maintain continuous operations by ensuring all shift operational staff use the “hot seat” changeover at shift changeover times and for operator rest break changeovers.

Contribute to “on the job” training of supervisory staff and undertake other duties within capabilities as required by senior management.

Contribute to the improvement of existing methodologies, processes and measurements when executing duties on an ongoing basis

Work in a high pace and complex work environment interacting continuously with teams, other functions, equipment control systems, external vendors, shipping lines, port authority etc.

Key vessel focal point for Operations and Customer service

Liaise with the Way Of Working and Transformation Team in order to continually review, identify and recommend improved operating procedures and systems where required

Fully support and participate in Way Of Working, Transformation and Lean initiatives and projects

Provides regular checks for current processes and initiates and supports performance improvement activities.

Works with the Human Resource Department on subjects and issues related to labor relations and compliance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement

Ability to work under pressure, anticipate potential problems and diagnose, evaluate and resolve logistical problems as they happen to meet operational performance objectives and deadlines

Requires strong leadership skills coupled with the ability to build a high performing team with the right combination of personalities

Strong management skills, capable of handling multiple mission-critical tasks simultaneously and ability to meet deadlines and set goals

Education

Requires a college degree in Operations Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Engineering, or related discipline

MBA preferred.

Education level may be substituted for part experience requirement

Formation

In-depth, comprehensive understanding of Port terminal operations, especially vessel cargo logistics, hazardous cargo, break-bulk and special cargo handling requirements

Desirable : certificate in safe materials handling

High level of planning and organizational skills, leadership skills and customer service skills

Ability to evaluate situations and make recommendations for improvement in productivity, safety, quality and customer service

ISO 9001-2015 e ISO 14001-2015

Continuous Improvement, Lean Six Sigma

Requires advanced level verbal and written communications skills in English (Over 75% English proficiency level).

Leadership, effective communication and conflict resolution skills

Microsoft Office Package.

Safety knowledge.

Experience

Requires at least 10 or more years in operations management roles in container terminals or similar industry.
